I even had nail art done to match my outfit.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLFVybHGy_sK5lydBGhyphenhyphen2I749O650vAgNHuN9o-Co8Kua2U1FscPOMklAyMWtkb3VKZVM0zHIs9OEk_WtccWlwCi_E2tbWsg8om-rn93a3HraZM9_xCGt4pIYVvpossox1oM18KwKn-QY/s640/blogger-image-1877930954.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; If you have a look on the side bar of my blog, you will see that my shop has had a bit of a makeover. I also have new products listed, like some of the embellishments I made a while ago. Please go check it out, tell me what you think, give me some feed back, and feel free to buy something while you are there :)Rhiannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13568006260335583718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8968777924168320225.post-26821617904785750252012-02-27T15:05:00.001+13:002012-02-27T15:05:34.510+13:00Crafty UpdateNot a lot of crafting is getting done lately, or more accurately, not a lot of projects are getting finished lately. During the day I am pretty busy trying to keep my immobile Little Man happy, and at night I am usually too tired to do anything. But I have finished I few things that I wanted to share.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVGz_dlZ8nbOJGN84Eu-UECH469tw9Od9LcHEIKEU9yx7hcDjzIUxXRp0XnjhaEKUBgeWxEK3Z65h0huihqfMeSzmZl86Hz6r2G9yDxksWga1STcri0NYQhkBBV-L4XemcvrQjKgSbsnk/s1600/DSC01831.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVGz_dlZ8nbOJGN84Eu-UECH469tw9Od9LcHEIKEU9yx7hcDjzIUxXRp0XnjhaEKUBgeWxEK3Z65h0huihqfMeSzmZl86Hz6r2G9yDxksWga1STcri0NYQhkBBV-L4XemcvrQjKgSbsnk/s400/DSC01831.JPG" width="236" /></a></div>
Most of my crafting is done on a spur of the moment sudden inspirational motivation buzz, so it has to be easy, quick and done using stuff I already have, or I will lose interest. I got a sudden urge to try designing and making a mermaid dress one day, and it turned out pretty awesome, except it is too small for Little Princess. She has had a growth spurt, and all of a sudden she's got some chub on her usually stick thin frame, which is great, but very inconvenient. The dress I made fits her, just, but its a little bit too tight and movement is near impossible, so not very practical.<br />

I've recently become a little bit obsessed with polymer clay, and watching video tutorials on YouTube. I made these two pendants last night, and the interchangeable necklace was made from bits of a necklace and a bracelet out of my junque stash. There are about a million videos on how to make a polymer clay robot, so I didn't follow any particular one, just took ideas from them and made it up as I went along. For the steam punk heart I used this awesome <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucxP8i58G1M" target="_blank">two part video tutorial</a>. The heart locket in the middle actually opens, but I haven't put anything inside it yet. Tonight I am going to make an owl and maybe a crown.<br />

This little shadow box was another random spur of the moment idea. I saw these dice in a dollar store, and I thought they would make cool feet for some kind of games themed box. When I got home I had a look around for a box or something and found this shadow box I got from a thrift store a while ago. It was pretty ugly, painted a gross yellow/green with some ugly flower thing inside. So I pulled it apart, painted it with a few coats of black acrylic paint, sanded it back a bit to make it look distressed, and filled it with game themed bits and pieces out of my stash. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.Rhiannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13568006260335583718noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8968777924168320225.post-744418241093238752012-02-14T14:55:00.000+13:002012-02-14T14:55:48.934+13:00Nature Explorer Kit<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I put together this kit for on of Little Princess's friends, who is turning 5 soon. I got the idea from<a href="http://chezbeeperbebe.blogspot.com/2011/06/make-this-nature-explorer-bag.html" target="_blank"> here</a>, but didn't have the time to make the bag, so I thought I would just put the kit together with a bag I already had.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
My kit includes:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
> A compass.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
> A dynamo torch.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
> Five little specimen jars with holes in the lids.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
> A magnifying glass.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
> Binoculars.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
> A sketch pad.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
> A note pad.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
> A set of coloured pencils.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
> A mutlicoloured pen.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
> Two fabric drawstring bags.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
> A small tin.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
> Khaki shoulder bag with pockets.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was lots of fun to put this kit together, and at some stage I will do one for Little Princess as well, but I will have to make a bag for hers.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The labels on the note pad, sketch pad, tin and drawstring bags were from the original tutorial above. I printed directly onto the fabric for the little drawstring bags, then used <a href="http://www.purlbee.com/easy-drawstring-bag/" target="_blank">this tutorial</a> to make the bags. The label on the front of the shoulder bag I made using clip art from MS Word, also printed on fabric.</div>Rhiannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13568006260335583718noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8968777924168320225.post-78016098581272988362012-02-09T22:18:00.000+13:002012-02-09T22:18:28.102+13:00How to Make a Flower & Leaf Press<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm working on another gift for a daycare friend, a Nature Explorer Kit, which I will share when it's finished. One of the things I wanted to include in the kit was a flower press, so I had a look around the net to find a tutorial to make one. I only found a couple of tutorials which involved using power tools (danger danger), so I decided to make it up, and I thought I would share how I did it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you know me, or have been following my blog for a while, you will know that I love to repurpose coasters, and I have a huge collection of them. So when I was looking at my old flower press from when I was a kid, it occurred to me that it is about the same size as a coaster, and the idea was born.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNfWQiz8J7nBk7h0gKeGcykp9wggA6uBNomNiJpLoSMTzwSPjiZEWHqlUYdb7nBEWCGUq1G6qFzOI7Wquaq11aqihhZJZ4RLvisbfG4ffFTncLkN6yWN6xJKvxml_jCDXkuAPLYaHckpQ/s1600/flower+press.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="377" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNfWQiz8J7nBk7h0gKeGcykp9wggA6uBNomNiJpLoSMTzwSPjiZEWHqlUYdb7nBEWCGUq1G6qFzOI7Wquaq11aqihhZJZ4RLvisbfG4ffFTncLkN6yWN6xJKvxml_jCDXkuAPLYaHckpQ/s400/flower+press.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1. Take two coasters that are not particularly attractive or useful, but make sure they are the same size. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2. Cover the top of the coasters with whatever paper you choose. I used some pictures of leaves and flowers out of an old children's encyclopaedia. Use a thin layer of mod podge to stick the paper onto the coaster. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3. Decorate the coaster that will be the top of your flower press. I used stamps to put the words 'Flower and Leaf Press' onto it, then glued on a pressed flower and leaf.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
4. Smooth the edges of the coaster using a nail file or fine sandpaper. Once the edges are smooth, put a coat or two of mod podge over the top of both (being careful not to smudge your ink like I did).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
5. Layer some pieces of paper between the two coasters. I used a sheet of printer paper, cut to size to fit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
6. Clip on some binder clips or bulldog clips to hold it all together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To use the press, layer your flowers and leaves between pieces of paper, like a sandwich, making sure there is a layer of paper on the top and bottom, so your nature finds don't get stuck to your coasters. Press it all together and hold tight with the clips. Put in your hot water cupboard, or some other dry, warm spot, for about a week. Pop open and admire your preserved pieces of nature.</div>

For Christmas my Wonderful Mum gave me a voucher to a<a href="http://artofcraft.co.nz/" target="_blank"> local craft store</a>, which I finally got a chance to use last week. The most favourite thing I bought has been a pack of <a href="http://artofcraft.co.nz/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=144_150&products_id=274" target="_blank">Tim Holtz Fragments - charms</a>, because they are just so awesome!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdwckhn5rPvYofZQIXTTfNFWXkANi8mg6L29YW-Ah8UZeDpAGTfkUNjD8QDOZCBhmwM6jQAgaomf8QLyy_TgqxyL1sR5xecA-RFGgYKPMIR8ZP4ag9vEXHXjT8w4or96KKiJq2VYhQnsk/s1600/DSC01759.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="275" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdwckhn5rPvYofZQIXTTfNFWXkANi8mg6L29YW-Ah8UZeDpAGTfkUNjD8QDOZCBhmwM6jQAgaomf8QLyy_TgqxyL1sR5xecA-RFGgYKPMIR8ZP4ag9vEXHXjT8w4or96KKiJq2VYhQnsk/s320/DSC01759.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The clockwork birdie charm was also bought in the same shopping trip, I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it. I didn't want to make it into a necklace because it just didn't quite seem right, so I got some Kilt pins from Spotlight to make it into a brooch. I also got <a href="http://artofcraft.co.nz/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=366_367&products_id=3053" target="_blank">these </a>and <a href="http://artofcraft.co.nz/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=366_367&products_id=3056" target="_blank">these</a> bottle cap images, so I used the pocket watch image inside of one of the charms.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuc6Cy1n-Y0P6OXkr1FNCl7sJHIyqWwiXkzGyrB6TTyhGGD81Q6Q8ic6R8jR8ff77Cfs01HAKaD-YDq6lFI_k-a2-TYbRv0cRSDb6UJipCdpQD2Jr5Vvup9EWxIItvcHPzsgLEswf1SPA/s1600/DSC01754.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="234" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuc6Cy1n-Y0P6OXkr1FNCl7sJHIyqWwiXkzGyrB6TTyhGGD81Q6Q8ic6R8jR8ff77Cfs01HAKaD-YDq6lFI_k-a2-TYbRv0cRSDb6UJipCdpQD2Jr5Vvup9EWxIItvcHPzsgLEswf1SPA/s320/DSC01754.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Then I had to make another kilt pin brooch. I used another charm and a vintage bird image (which I think is from <a href="http://www.graphicsfairy.blogspot.co.nz/" target="_blank">The Graphics Fairy</a>). I did a little mini mixed media collage inside a watch face (inspired by ones found<a href="http://www.rubydixie.com/_shop/" target="_blank"> here</a>). Then I added a little polka dot bow, some lace, and a pearl/bead/chain dangle off an old necklace.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used a larger round charm, some vintage sheet music and another bottle cap image to make a pendant.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And I still have 45 charms left to use, just imagine how much jewellery I can make!</div>

On a completely different subject, Little Princess has finally decided to start wearing headbands!! So of course I had to make her a couple, because I have been dying to do this for 4 years now. The crown was made using a cuttlebug die, some self-adhesive glitter craft foam and some felt. The yellow and blue one was made to go with her "fancy clothes", which is a frilly blue skirt and a yellow top with a cute tulle bow.Rhiannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13568006260335583718noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8968777924168320225.post-41736134768366772122012-01-31T11:12:00.000+13:002012-01-31T11:12:16.187+13:00MPAY: GREEN!!When I saw the theme for this weeks <a href="http://punkysmamma.blogspot.com/2012/01/my-place-and-yours-green.html" target="_blank">MPAY Meme</a> over at<a href="http://punkysmamma.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"> Vic's</a>, I knew I had to join in due to my latest favourite discoveries.<br />

The other new discovery is the best camping spot in the world. It's so beautiful, and green, and totally unspoiled. We spent a weekend there, and loved it. We really didn't want to leave, and can't wait for the next time we can go. But Little Man is going into hospital this week to have surgery on his legs, so we won't be going camping again any time soon.Rhiannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13568006260335583718noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8968777924168320225.post-26448859044483483222012-01-16T20:48:00.000+13:002012-01-16T20:49:47.741+13:00Child's Baby Doll Sling - A Mini TutorialToday little princess asked me to make her something, and I was a bit shocked that I hadn't already thought to make her one before. She goes through phases of playing with baby dolls then barbie dolls, and for quite a while it has been all about the barbie dolls. But today she was playing with her baby doll stuff, and NEEDED a sling to carry her baby while they were shopping. I am more than happy to make her something that encourages imaginitive play, and will keep her occupied for more than 5 minutes, so I set to it. I knew it had to be a quick project, because if I took too long she would lose interest while waiting, so I came up with a 5 minute baby doll sling. I am sharing it in case there are other mums out there reading this, in need of something quick to occupy bored children.<br />

With the whole family on holiday from work and daycare at the moment, my days are filled with family time, and constantly working against the forces determined to make my house look like a bomb hit it.<br />
<br />
I have managed to fit in some crafting time, but the weather has been shocking so taking decent photos has been a challenge.<br />

Some last minute Christmas gifts I made for my cousin's children. She has 4 children under 4, two of each, so I just made them something little, because with 4 small kids you are bound to have way too much toys and junk in your house already, right? For the oldest girl I made some hairclips (pinwheels made using<a href="http://papernstitchblog.com/2010/06/30/playful-pinwheels-tutorial/" target="_blank"> this tutorial</a>), and for the youngest, who is only a few months old, I made a taggie square. For the two boys, who are in between, I made lizard hand puppets using <a href="http://holloughby.blogspot.com/2011/05/sewing-tuesday-lizard-named-lionel.html" target="_blank">this tutorial</a>.<br />

Yesterday we had a 4th birthday party to go to, for a girl who is a bit of a tom boy. I wanted to make something that is still kinda girly, but not all pink or purple or overly girly. A while ago I found a bag of half finished, or started and forgotten about, hexies. Since finding them I have seen a few bags on Pinterest that incorporated hexies or some other similar quilted shape (<a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/237846424040117570/" target="_blank">here</a>,<a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/237846424040134913/" target="_blank"> here</a> & <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/237846424040230109/" target="_blank">here</a>). My version is a denim shoulder tote bag, with a hexy pocket on the front, lined with red polkadot fabric. I also made a little zip purse with hexy decoration on the front (first time I have sewed a zip, so proud!), and an I-spy bottle inspired by <a href="http://meetthedubiens.blogspot.com/2010/11/i-spy-bottles.html" target="_blank">this one</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMM4GFEQQJxA4qA9aMm7-GbK7sMXXd7nr-UNF8AwIc129Wh-u-h3LhvevrB4eu-gZko3l4qW58XHL2AuvhOv9Fq7Jq2D6Cep5TuxmFr8b4iJdZu0m9JxJWhqLqDCeNJyBeoJOCchKW7hA/s1600/DSC01570.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMM4GFEQQJxA4qA9aMm7-GbK7sMXXd7nr-UNF8AwIc129Wh-u-h3LhvevrB4eu-gZko3l4qW58XHL2AuvhOv9Fq7Jq2D6Cep5TuxmFr8b4iJdZu0m9JxJWhqLqDCeNJyBeoJOCchKW7hA/s400/DSC01570.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I offered to make cupcakes for the party, but then my cupcakes didn't rise, so I had the idea to turn them into cakepops, by putting them onto iceblock sticks, and they were a big hit. A happy accident that I will try to repeat one day. With the left over melted white chocolate and sprinkles I made chocolate freckles, and together with the cakepops they looked so cool.<br />
The party was supposed to be kind of strawberry shortcake themed, but it was put together quite last minute, so a lot of the planned decorations and things didn't get put up. But I never miss an opportunity to dress up, so I put together a Raspberry Torte costume for me, and Little Princess was dressed as Strawberry Shortcake. I don't have photo's, but one day hopefully we will get to dress up in our costumes again.Rhiannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13568006260335583718noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8968777924168320225.post-72928414313888842422011-12-15T14:30:00.000+13:002011-12-16T09:12:41.350+13:00Teacher Gifts<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

A small last minute Christmas gift for Little Princess's daycare teachers, inspired by these gorgeous<a href="http://velvetstrawberries.typepad.com/andreasingarella/2011/04/bookmark-chit-chat.html" target="_blank"> ribbon bookmarks</a>. These are super quick and easy to make. I was trying to think of something little and easy to make for her teachers, since she decided yesterday that they needed gifts and today is her last day for the year. When I finally found the ribbon clasps at spotlight a while ago I bought several packets, because I knew they would be great to have on hand for last minute gifts. I always have loads of ribbon, beads and charms on hand, so I can whip these up any time. The gift boxes were from my stash as well, I bought them years ago from spotlight, they are meant to hold bracelets but they work pretty well for bookmarks. It's such a shame books are going electronic, I do love books and bookshops and libraries....I will miss them when they are gone.Rhiannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13568006260335583718noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8968777924168320225.post-37281704349159145592011-12-14T12:53:00.003+13:002011-12-14T18:17:50.696+13:00The end of a BIG PROJECTThis project has been many weeks in the making. It's a thank you/goodbye gift for the infant centre that Little Man has been going to for the last 2 years. The staff there have been great with him, more than happy to put in the extra one-on-one time he requires, and always wanting to know what else they could be doing to encourage his development. He has now reached the stage where he really is more of a toddler, even though he's not toddling yet, so next year he will be moving up to the toddler centre. This is also the last child we will have at the infant centre (all going to plan), so we wanted to give a big gift to say thanks for all the wonderful things they have done for both of our children.<br />

The idea was to make one giant granny square rag rug, but it was going to be too heavy, and too hard to wash, and the outer layers were taking way too much fabric, so instead I made four separate rugs that are each about 60x60cm, which can be put together to make a big square, or laid out in a line or however they want really. If you look closely at the photos you can probably guess the order that I made them in, practice really does make perfect, and the last one I did is by far my favourite. Then I attempted a rag bowl, which worked out brilliantly, so I decided to make a set of them as well, but I can't seem to get them to turn out the same even following the same pattern, so they have kind of turned into nesting bowls. I still love the first one I made the best (the bottom one), it was the perfect size and shape, so I will keep trying until I figure out the secret recipe for crochet rag bowl perfection.<br />

Just a little extra cuteness, Little Princess had to dress up as a Disney character for a birthday party in the weekend, and this is the Tinkerbell costume we put together. Doesn't she make just the cutest Tinkerbell ever? She already had the dress, tights and shoes, I just added white pompoms to her shoes with hot glue. I made the little cape at the last minute because it was a bit cold, I just cut a huge leaf shape out of some green fabric and fastened it at the front with a crochet flower brooch I made ages ago.<br />

I really love crafting and making handmade gifts, but when it becomes a chore, something that I spend every spare minute doing, then it's not so fun any more. I'm not complaining, I do it because I love it, and I think everyone should give handmade if they can. But just when I think I am nearing the end of my list of gifts to make, Little princess gets invited to another birthday party, or someone asks me to make something for someone, or we remember someone else who needs a gift. I completely forgot about a whole branch of my family that we always catch up with around Xmas time, so now I have to think of more gifts to make. But I am making progress, I think.<br />

This is a gift for another 5th birthday party we have been invited to this weekend. I made a cooking/baking set, because I already had the <a href="http://remarquablejunque.blogspot.com/2011/11/more-gifts-in-making.html" target="_blank">chef's hat</a> (was supposed to be for Little princess, but I have promised to make her another one), someone gave me the idea for the apron the other day, and the <a href="http://www.homespun-threads.com/hp_zencart/download/LittleChefPatterns.pdf" target="_blank">glove</a> was easy to make. Then I went and collected some baking essentials from dollar stores to add to the sewn stuff. Then I had to go further and make a menu board, because I had some chalkboard paint left over. I painted an old place mat with the chalkboard paint, added some scrap booking letters to spell MENU and mod podged over the letters to protect them. I included a little wooden easel to hold the menu board, plus some chalk and a duster. And the last edition was the recipe cards, created and printed from <a href="http://www.skiptomylou.org/recipe-card-maker/" target="_blank">here</a>, with recipes for cupcakes, cookie dough, butter cream icing and cookie icing, plus a couple of blank ones for her to add her favourite recipes.<br />

For our big family gathering every other year, instead of buying meaningless gifts for everyone, we each bring one $10 gift and play that game where you choose a number and go around in order choosing a gift when it's your turn or you can steal from someone else. It's a fun way to do it, and everyone gets something. So this year I have, of course, made our gifts. This one is a set of chalkboard wine glasses, with chalk of course. When I saw<a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/237846424040140610/" target="_blank"> this </a>on pinterest, I thought it would be perfect for one of the gifts, and when I found this set of wine glasses on special for $9, it was perfect.</div>

The second gift took a bit more time and effort, and is still not quite finished (I still have to tie ribbons on the tags, which I am doing tonight). I made a set of six<a href="http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/resources/tutorials/cardpouch/" target="_blank"> cards in a folder</a>, and a set of 24 <a href="http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/resources/tutorials/christmastagwallet/" target="_blank">tags in a wallet</a>. Both of these ideas are from <a href="http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/resources/" target="_blank">SplitCoast Stampers</a>, but for decorating the cards and tags I got inspiration from <a href="http://pinterest.com/rhiannonw/paper-craft-stamping/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a>..<br />

For the two craft groups I go to, we had to bring a $5 gift to swap. For one of them I made a framed pincushion, and bought a cool birdcage cross stitch design to go with it. If you look closely you will see some jewelled pins in the pincushion, which I also made a while ago.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Can you tell I love this fabric? I bought a fat quarter of it, and I've used it to make quite a few little things now, and I've just about run out. For the other gift I made a magnetic note board, using a weird metal thing I found at funky junk, and some repurposed buttons, jewellery and bits to make the magnets.</div>

This is not a gift, but I still had to share it. This is the outfit I have put together for little man to wear for Christmas. I sewed the "tie" onto a plain white t-shirt. The hat was a robin hood hat out of the dress up box, I sewed a circle of red felt over the robin hood picture on the front, and attached a couple of mini candy cane ornaments, and put a bell on the top. The pants he already had. Isn't it cute?? Chances are he will get the shirt dirty straight away, and we'll never be able to keep the hat on his head, but it's the thought that counts, right?<br />

The Christmas tree is up, the advent calendar has begun it's countdown, and I even made a wreath to complete the look. Christmas decorating is a bit tricky this year, with Little Man getting into everything within reach. I don't remember it being difficult when Little Princess was a toddler, but maybe I have just blocked out those memories. So the Christmas tree has been put on top of a coffee table which is on top of another coffee table, and so far he hasn't tried to pull on anything to get to it (touch wood, fingers crossed and all that)(we won't mention all the other dangerous and life threatening things he has done in the last week).<br />
The advent calendar was fun to put together. I found a couple of these house shaped shelves at a thrift store and immediately imagined making one into an advent calendar. I then went around the house looking for little containers and boxes to fit in the holes. I had the numbers already from a perpetual calendar I started making (and never finished). Then I went to a couple of dollar stores looking for little things to put inside the containers, and got things like hairties, bead sets, bubbles, a notebook, jewellery. Some of the containers have little treats like mini marshmellows, santa chocolates, lollies. So far she has opened 5 of them, and she has loved every one. Next year I hope Little Man will be old enough to be included in the advent calendar, but I think he still may not "get it".<br />

I was asked by a friend to make some chef hats for her girls for Christmas using <a href="http://www.kidspot.co.nz/article+3625+235+Little-chef-hat.htm" target="_blank">this tutorial</a>, so I decided to make one for little princess first as a test run. The tutorial has the words Bon Appetit embroidered on the hat band, but I don't know how to do that, so instead I just made a fabric flower to attach.<br />
<div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjd-G4lGs9oGEGurfSyi9k7zJcLeo7GtNAS_q7GHOtcsKAXKhbP9MaTscj75TFqS6oaadsvZBEHd_5jO02-tbPyr2keUuX_F0j2BejcUgnntnWSwK_LYJJWix5el557-19V_AXTnjeOHT4/s1600/picnic+basket.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="282" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjd-G4lGs9oGEGurfSyi9k7zJcLeo7GtNAS_q7GHOtcsKAXKhbP9MaTscj75TFqS6oaadsvZBEHd_5jO02-tbPyr2keUuX_F0j2BejcUgnntnWSwK_LYJJWix5el557-19V_AXTnjeOHT4/s400/picnic+basket.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
For another friends birthday I made a picnic blanket and basket set. I made the lining for the basket just kind of making it up as I went along, and it worked quite well. The cutlery holder is made from a tea towel and a vintage napkin, the top folds down over the pockets, then it wraps up and is tied with attached ribbons. The picnic blanket was put together with bits of fabric and linen out of my stash, patched together and backed with knit fabric. There is a layer of wool blanket in the middle, for insulation, so this is a pretty heavy blanket. It rolls up and ties up with attached ties. I also added to the basket some citronella candles (completely necessary here for any picnic in the evening), plastic cutlery for 4, 4 plastic wine glasses, 4 fabric napkins, a cutting board, bottle opener/corkscrew, pate knife and cheese knife. The idea for the set was to make a portable wine and cheese basket for friends, but add some plates and you could also make it work for a picnic lunch/dinner.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
This is the only Christmas gift I have made so far, for my niece. I made her a fabric notebook cover, with slots for pens/pencils inside the front cover. I tried to find a tutorial, but they all seemed to make it so much more complicated than it needed to be, so again I just made it up. That's the way I do things most of the time, look at some tutorials and photos, look at my stash to see what I have, then wing it. I hate to measure and iron, so if the instructions say to do those things I skip it.</div>

And a bunny costume for little princess to wear to a farm themed party. I didn't really make the costume, except sewing an oval of pink felt on the front of a white t-shirt, and tying a ribbon around a plastic carrot. Isn't she a cute bunny? But she's also a cute dinosaur, so I guess that's not really difficult.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I've still got a list as long as my arm of things I have to make before Christmas. My first quilt ever, made based on <a href="http://www.aprettycoollife.com/2010/07/rainbow-bunting-baby-quilt-tutorial.html" target="_blank">this</a> tutorial, but with some variations (I don't do bias binding). And to go with the quilt, using the same fabrics, I made a Scottie dog rattle&squeak toy, a sailboat taggie (inspired by <a href="http://sewandthecity.blogspot.com/2011/08/ship-ahoi.html" target="_blank">this</a> tutorial), a crochet rattle ball, and a bunting card (inspired by <a href="http://saidosdaconcha.blogspot.com/2010/12/handmade-christmas-cards.html" target="_blank">these</a> cards).</div>

This one I made a few months back, for another birthday party Little Princess was invited to. I made a messenger bag using the same tutorial, and filled it with boy things. Then we made wrapping paper and a card together. The wrapping paper was actually really cool.</div>

The winner of my Month of Costumes Giveaway is <a href="http://www.elijahsmum.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Kelly</a>. Congrats Kelly!! And thanks for all the lovely comments, I wish I could send something to everyone who commented, but at the moment I just don't have the time or the money. Why do I always forget how busy the lead up to Christmas can be?? Every year I say I will be more prepared next time, and then it sneaks up on me. Next year will be better....Rhiannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13568006260335583718noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8968777924168320225.post-11221815214584923232011-10-31T20:50:00.000+13:002011-10-31T20:50:41.628+13:00Trick or TreatI just wanted to share the costume i put together for Little princess to wear, for her brief attempt at trick or treating tonight (it was her first time).<br />

This is one of my absolute favourite costumes, which is why I saved it for last. And I am so happy with how the make up turned out, because I wasn't sure I could pull it off without practising. This one is not so much about the costume, but more about the make up, and to get the look right I watched A LOT of youtube videos. There wasn't any particular one I followed to get this look, but just took ideas and bits and pieces from all of them. If you search day of the dead or sugar skull on Youtube you will get heaps of make up tutorials. Put the make up together with a long skirt, some lacy shawls and a headband adorned with flowers, and you've got the whole costume.<br />

This is all stuff I already had in my wardrobe or have used for previous costumes; black pants, black top, black velvet jacket with leopard print collar, black corset, black boots, top hat with leopard print scarf tied around base. The "whip" is a paintbrush with a skinny belt wrapped around it and some leather string from the craft room attached to the end.Rhiannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13568006260335583718noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8968777924168320225.post-33998834102161852092011-10-29T08:46:00.000+13:002011-10-29T08:46:10.088+13:00My Place and Yours<div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDlxsyYjNmQRgNf4YTlIADd-zBc6nXxf2FNyOFcRkNab88B7ULERmqUtCX9gtR-ytBt2hajpO8t8RLDoRdcfNNC77Qtr3u-yrZdC0uBNjDEeWVW3paFT6AXcRteRPtfuiepPevwBezma4/s1600/DSC01135.JPG"><img border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDlxsyYjNmQRgNf4YTlIADd-zBc6nXxf2FNyOFcRkNab88B7ULERmqUtCX9gtR-ytBt2hajpO8t8RLDoRdcfNNC77Qtr3u-yrZdC0uBNjDEeWVW3paFT6AXcRteRPtfuiepPevwBezma4/s400/DSC01135.JPG" /></a> </div><br />This weeks theme was My Pincushion. I have many, many pincushions, but these are the latest ones I have made. I love making pincushions, they are such a quick crafty fix, when you feel the urge to make something but don't have a lot of time, or need to make a last minute gift for a crafty friend. When I saw <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-V9qmKE9wN4&feature=feedu">this tutorial</a> on <a href="http://www.thediydish.com/">The DIY Dish</a>, I knew I had to make one, or many, and I love them! For the purple one I used a champagne flute instead of a candlestick, because that's what I had on hand, and just filled the inside of the glass with beads and buttons.<br /><br />If you love pincushions as much as I do, then you should really head over to see all the other <a href="http://punkysmamma.blogspot.com/2011/10/my-place-and-yours.html">M.P.A.Y. links</a>.<div style='clear:both; text-align:CENTER'><a href='http://picasa.google.com/blogger/' target='ext'><img src='http://photos1.blogger.com/pbp.gif' alt='Posted by Picasa' style='border: 0px none ; padding: 0px; background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 50%; -moz-background-clip: initial; -moz-background-origin: initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: initial;' align='middle' border='0' /></a></div>Rhiannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13568006260335583718noreply@blogger.com0
